JAMIE FELTON is a painter, dancer and poet based in Los Angeles. Felton gathers data through her own life experience as a Filipino American woman and a feminist. She utilizes an explicitly decorative, “feminine” language as shorthand notations to de-cypher and undercut the problems of painting. Ornamental gatherings of plants, floras, little dogs, domestic vignettes, women, butterflies and bats are collaged together with designs pulled from Japanese and Hawaiian folklore. These things accumulate into a vocabulary that is used to break down painting. Like a caveman trying to describe her dinner, she uses her own necessarily inadequate vocabulary to narrate an experience.
